Smart Water Underfloor Heating Thermostat tado° X (2nd gen)

tado° X Smart Thermostat for Underfloor Heating (2nd Generation)

Does your underfloor heating struggle to keep your home at a comfortable temperature, or does it keep using energy when nobody's home? Water-based underfloor heating takes time to warm up and cool down, so it needs smart, precise control.

The tado° X Smart Thermostat for Underfloor Heating (2nd Generation) is designed with these needs in mind. Drawing on 15 years of experience in smart heating technology, it learns how your home responds to heat and adapts to your daily routine. It can help cut heating costs by an average of 22%, while independent research by the Fraunhofer Institute has reported savings of up to 28%. Depending on your heating system and usage, the thermostat could pay for itself within the first few heating seasons.

Why is this model a great fit for underfloor heating?

This wired thermostat is designed to replace an old mechanical or basic digital wall thermostat that controls your underfloor heating manifold and valves. Replacing it is straightforward: remove your old thermostat and connect the tado° X to the existing wall wiring. Its matte white finish looks clean and modern, blending easily into your home.

Do you need a Bridge X?

To connect the thermostat to the internet and control it from your phone, you'll need a Thread Border Router, such as a compatible smart home hub. The thermostat is sold without a bridge, so here's how to tell whether you need one:

• You DON'T need an additional Bridge X if:

  • You already have a compatible smart home hub, such as an Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) or Amazon Echo (4th generation).

  • You already own another tado° X device that came with a Bridge X, or you have a tado° Heat Pump Optimizer.

• You'll NEED to buy a tado° Bridge X if:

  • You don't have any of the Thread-compatible devices listed above. (Please note: the older tado° V3+ Internet Bridge isn't compatible with devices in the new X range.)

Smart features for everyday comfort

• Smart control for underfloor heating: The thermostat understands the difference between a gas boiler that heats up quickly and underfloor heating that takes longer to warm up. The tado° system can switch the heating off before the room reaches the target temperature, helping prevent overheating and wasted energy. It supports both Relay and OpenTherm, making it compatible with most European heating systems.

• Smart schedules and remote control: Use the free app to set when you want your floors to warm up. Your schedules are stored on the thermostat itself, so your heating will keep following them even if your internet goes down.

• Fast, reliable Matter and Thread connectivity: The wireless Thread network provides a stable connection without adding extra load to your home Wi-Fi. With Matter support, the thermostat also works with smart home platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

• Easy DIY installation: The tado° app provides a clear, step-by-step guide to help you install the thermostat yourself. No need to call out an installer.

• Works with other tado° devices: The thermostat can sync with other tado° smart thermostats, helping you manage the temperature throughout your home.

What's new in the 2nd-generation tado° X?

The tado° X range combines an updated design with practical features that make everyday heating control even easier.

1. Rechargeable USB-C battery: No more buying and replacing batteries. The built-in battery charges via USB-C, and a single charge can last through the heating season.

2. Humidity readings on the display: You can now check the room temperature and humidity at a glance. This makes it easier to keep your home's indoor climate comfortable.

3. Touch-sensitive Light Ring: Adjust the temperature by sliding your finger around the edge of the thermostat. The LED matrix display makes it easy to see and change your settings.

4. Child Lock: A handy feature for families. You can lock the thermostat's physical controls in the app to stop children from accidentally changing your heating settings while playing nearby.

5. Customisable shortcut button: There's a physical button on top of the thermostat that you can set up for quick access to the functions you use most.

The tado° app: save energy every day

Available for iOS and Android, the tado° app makes it easier to manage your heating and keep your home comfortable.

Free features, with no subscription required:

• Smart notifications: Geofencing detects when you leave home or return, while open-window detection helps prevent heat from going to waste. The app sends a notification to your phone, such as "Looks like nobody's home. Would you like to lower the underfloor heating?" You can then confirm what you want to do with a single tap.

• Weather adaptation: The system checks the local weather forecast and can reduce heating in advance when sunny weather is expected. Natural warmth from the sun helps heat the room, so your system doesn't use more energy than necessary.

Auto-Assist — hands-free heating control: If you'd rather not respond to notifications yourself, you can subscribe to Auto-Assist. Geofencing and open-window detection then work automatically, adjusting your heating without you having to lift a finger. The subscription also gives you access to detailed energy-use insights (Energy IQ) and heating system monitoring (Care & Protect), helping you spot potential issues before they become bigger problems.
